Gargantius Effect + Kinda Green. Gargantius Effect is the brainchild of Murray Campbell (violin, oboe and electronics) and Randy McKean (reeds). Like the Stanislaw Lem story of the same name, in which armies of warring soldiers are linked together to form a peaceful, blissfully-aware omni-mind, so, too, these long-time collaborators channel their contrarian impulses into synchronized bouts of free improvisation, compositional constructs and mechanized mayhem. For this show, they're celebrating the recent electronic release "GE+1+2+3 (Nor Cal, 08-2011)" by adding the symbiotic duality of special guests Kinda Green (Tom Djll and Tim Perkis) into the equation. At Berkeley Arts, 2133 University Ave., Berkeley CA. 8pm.

Skatchit is a project of Tom Nunn and David Michalak, a duo who play “skatch box” instruments designed and built by Tom. For years Tom Nunn has been building electrically amplified percussion surfaces. You might think of the Skatch Box as Tom’s “laptop” — smaller versions of his instruments based on small cardboard boxes. A couple of Skatchit CDs have resulted, playing in trio with guests.
That’s what is going on at this concert with guests Gino Robair - “Energized Surfaces”, Ron Heglin -Voice, Tim Perkis - Electronics, Jacob Felix Heule - Percussion and Scott Looney - Piano. There will be five short sets and a finale with all 7 musicians.

w Chris Brown. Speaking about music. Conversation with Derk Richardson. IMPROV 21
Rova:Arts is pleased to present Improv:21, a series of “informances” on twenty-first century music that explore the connection between predetermined structure (composition) and performer interpretation (improvisation).
Led by master improvisers and composers from the Bay Area and beyond, and hosted by critic and KPFA radio host Derk Richardson, Improv:21 programs look at the many ways of organizing improvisation through a shifting (i.e. “improvised”) combination of onstage lecture and dialogue, musical demonstration and performance, and audience question-and-answer forum.

Some reviews of Viv Corringham:
"Corringham's enchanting musical journey…possessed a quality that set the pulses racing." Edwin Pouncey -The Wire
"ethno-cyberpunk diva. (Her) voice is a thing of wonder, ranging from lilting folkiness to speaking-in-tongues wildness" Richard Sanderson- programme notes
"Corringham's affecting performance can be heard either as a still, small individual voice pitted against urban racket, or as a symbiotic duet between her vocalising and a large truck, recorded live in the street."-- The Wire

Droneshift: 40 musicians in shifts, over 4 hours, play a drone. 21grand, Oakland Show: exactly 7:00pm to 11:00pm Doors: 6:30pm
$8-12 sliding scale
Sick of wanky guitar solos, unintelligible lyrics, cheesily programmed
beats, and hard-to-figure-out highbrow ideas? Overreact by coming to
DroneShift, where about 40 musicians will present four hours of continuous
long tones and unusual textures that wouldn't develop anywhere else!
With a wide variety of musicians from different bay area experimental music
communities playing 4 to 10 at a time in overlapping shifts, the music will
gradually evolve from lovely all-acoustic moments to sheets of peeling noise
and back with many points in between. At times, it will sound like several
different instruments are contributing to a single, complex, unique note.
All the funds will go to 21 Grand, a venue that has made huge efforts to
provide a place for unusual shows like this one. The current space is going
to be turned into condominiums, so we're trying to raise funds for them to
move into another space nearby.
Since the music goes nonstop for 4 hours, it will be perfectly normal to get
up and walk around while the musicians are playing.
Currently, the musicians are:
